In the same way, every Christian is a patient in need of soul care. Jesus is our physician. He attends to our need. In the Church there is a name for beholding Jesus, it’s called the Beatific Vision. What a beautiful, glorious sight is the One who rescues us from our guilt and shame and obsession with this age.
John reminds us in 1 John 3:2, that one day we will see him as he really is. His glory will be ours to behold for forever. Until that day, we push on the call buttons of Scripture and prayer, and in faith we see him (2 Corinthians 5:7). The Scriptures become the “face” of Jesus, for they speak of him (Luke 24:44). Prayer becomes the communication of our diagnosis and cure.
The psalmist gives us a hint of the sight we will see when Jesus will open the door to take us home. He says we will see his face and be satisfied with his image (Psalm 17:15). His righteousness will sanctify us completely and in pure hearts we will be blessed forever. Nothing of this world fulfills us. The sight of our Savior is better than all the riches, all the fleeting pleasures, all the relationships and concerns of this life. We will behold him and enjoy his presence and grace and love forever.
At the resurrection, our Physician will deliver us from the ills of this age and we will see God face to face. We will have everlasting satisfaction. Our souls, our minds, our bodies will awake in eternity and his sight will be all-satisfying to us. What a beautiful, unending sight to behold!
To see him on that beautiful day, we have to see him by faith in this day. See him by faith in the Scriptures. See him and hear him by faith in your prayers. Don’t ever lose sight of him. One day your faith will turn to sight and you will see Jesus face to face, forever!
