In these last days [God] has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Hebrews 1:2-3

The Supremacy of Jesus Christ

Who is Jesus Christ?
And why is he supremely worthy of our worship?

When we say Jesus Christ has supreme worth, we speak of him being above or over everyone and everything else. Jesus Christ is the super-ultimate one; the greatest in power, authority, and value. He is the supreme treasure of the universe. Jesus is the greatest in importance, significance, character, and glory.

In your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11

How do we know Jesus is supremely worthy?

The Bible says so. The Bible is all about Jesus. God gave us the Bible in two major parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament promises, anticipates, and looks forward to Christ. The New Testament confirms, celebrates, and proclaims Christ.

Why did he die on the cross?

Jesus died on the cross to take away sin. We don’t have to assume that he did this. The Bible tells us. In John 1:29, when Jesus was coming toward him John the Baptist said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Being the Lamb of God is an Old Testament image of sacrificially covering sin for God’s people. The sacrificial lamb was the way God’s people were forgiven of sin. Sacrifices were needed over and over for many generations, until the perfect lamb came who was the perfect substitute for God’s people. This was Jesus.

The Bible tells us about Jesus so that we will believe that he is the Lamb of God (our Savior) and have eternal life with him (John 20:30-31). This is the highest and best demonstration of love. God the Father sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die, so sinners will repent of their sin, believe that Jesus saves, and have relationship with him forever.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

And the faith that is required, God gives. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8, “By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

God makes people followers of Jesus, and promises them that Jesus will return and take them home to be with him forever. And nothing will stop him from being with his people (Romans 8:38-39).

Until then, he has given his people a mission. It’s a Great Commission. To go and make disciples, and then mark them as disciples by baptizing them, and then after that teach them to obey all that he has commanded. Jesus gives a new life that is lived in him and by his words.

Jesus is worth telling others about. He is worth worshiping and living for. He is supremely worthy of trusting in and submitting to him.

Everything God’s people do is for the supreme worth of Jesus Christ.
